The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki as its national chairman.
The affirmation took place on Saturday during the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, an event monitored by PrimeTell.
Turaki, who emerged as the sole candidate for the opposition party’s top position, garnered 1,516 votes in the exercise.
His emergence followed the earlier withdrawal of Lado Dan Marke, who contested the 2023 Katsina State governorship election on the party’s platform, from the chairmanship race.

Whilst the positions of youth leader and deputy national legal adviser were stepped down during the convention, the remaining 17 positions were uncontested and the candidates automatically declared elected.
The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) had in August zoned its presidential ticket to the southern region. Following party tradition, the national chairmanship position was subsequently zoned to the north.
Through a series of stakeholder meetings held in October, northern leaders adopted Turaki as their consensus candidate for the position.
The October meetings were attended by prominent party figures including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed; Plateau’s Caleb Mutfwang; Adamawa’s Ahmadu Fintiri; Zamfara’s Dauda Lawal; and Umar Damagum.
Other notable attendees included former Senate President, Bukola Saraki; Jerry Gana, former Minister of Information; Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro; and Ibrahim Shekarau, former Minister of Education, amongst others.
The convention marks a significant moment for the main opposition party as it seeks to reposition itself ahead of 2027 general election.
