Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District, has issued a strongly worded response to recent criticisms from Abia State Governor Alex Otti, describing the governor’s remarks as a “vitriolic outburst” and “gutter politics at its lowest.”
In a statement released on Wednesday, the former Abia State governor said Governor Otti’s attack on him for affirming his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was “nothing short of a shameful spectacle” and a “frantic attempt by an administration to deflect from its own inadequacies.”
Senator Kalu stated that his commitment to bolstering APC’s presence in Abia State ahead of the 2027 elections, including supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid and ensuring a strong APC governorship candidate, is a legitimate political expression in a democracy and not “war” as characterised by the governor’s supporters.
The senator took issue with Governor Otti’s use of personal insults, including accusations of “information deficiency syndrome” and claims of disgraceful conduct. “Such language is unbecoming of a governor, and sadly reveals a man that is insecure in his seat, and haunted by the ghosts of his own political fragility,” Senator Kalu stated.
Describing the governor’s attack as hypocritical, Senator Kalu pointed out that Otti rode into office on the Labour Party’s platform promising change, yet now attacks others for partisan activities. “Does Otti forget that politics is about competition, not coronation?” the senator asked.
Senator Kalu revealed that he has repeatedly extended olive branches to Governor Otti, acknowledging him as a “friend” and even suggesting that forward-thinking leaders like him belong in the APC. He questioned why the governor, if truly confident in divine mandate, would be “panicky” and “insecure” about APC’s growing momentum in Abia State.
“Could it be that he knows that APC’s momentum in Abia is strong and unstoppable? Is he scared that the disillusioned citizens of Abia have become tired of unfulfilled promises and are rearing to make a pronouncement in 2027?” Senator Kalu stated.
The senator challenged Governor Otti to focus on governance rather than attacking political opponents, urging him to make bold statements in healthcare, youth unemployment, and security. “Otti must be reminded that Abians deserve better than a governor who prioritises personal vendettas over progress,” he said.
Senator Kalu also challenged the governor to face the electorate without hiding behind insults if he is confident in his performance. “Abians are not fools; they will speak emphatically when the time comes,” he stated.
Reaffirming his commitment to the APC, Senator Kalu said his dedication stems not from personal ambition but from commitment to Nigeria’s unity and prosperity. He cited his record of securing federal projects for Abia, advocating for Southeast interests, and bridging divides in a polarised nation.
The senator declared that Governor Otti’s negativity would only strengthen his resolve to mobilise resources “legally, ethically, and vigorously” to ensure APC’s triumph in 2027. “If Otti chooses to stay in his sinking Labour Party ship, so be it; we will fight on the field of ideas, policies, and people power,” he stated.
In concluding his statement, Senator Kalu advised Governor Otti to “quit confrontation and govern because time is running out.” He urged the governor to stop “descending into petty name-calling,” adding that “Abia deserves leaders who build, not those who burn bridges.”
