Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District, was at the forefront of legislative activity at Thursday’s Senate plenary session, playing an active role in the screening and confirmation of Dr. Mustapha Rabe Darma as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The former Governor of Abia State engaged the nominee in pointed questioning, probing his competence, professional track record, and readiness to shoulder the responsibilities of a federal minister ,a process he described as essential to safeguarding the public interest.
The confirmation was conducted in accordance with Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Kalu, who has consistently positioned himself as a vocal advocate for accountability in governance, made clear that the Senate’s oversight role must serve as a filter against the appointment of individuals unfit for public office.
The lawmaker also lent his voice to three legislative matters before the chamber: the National Assembly Service Pension Board (Establishment) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (SB 443); the National Health Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (SB 886); and the University Teaching Hospitals (Reconstitution of Boards) Bill.
The bills, which span pension administration, public health reform, and university hospital governance, are central to ongoing efforts to modernise Nigeria’s institutional architecture.
Senator Kalu reaffirmed his commitment to diligent legislative service, stating his focus remains on advancing policies that drive national development and improve the lives of Nigerians.
