The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following reports that popular Nollywood actor, Alexx Ekubo, has died at the age of 40 after a private battle with cancer.
News of his death emerged on Tuesday evening, sending shockwaves across social media, where fans and colleagues expressed grief over the loss of the award-winning movie star. For months, many had questioned his absence from the public space, with his last major social media activity dating back to late 2024.
Ekubo, a graduate of Law from the University of Calabar who also held a diploma in Mass Communication, first gained national attention after emerging first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria contest. The achievement paved the way for a successful acting career that spanned more than a decade.
Known for his charisma, versatility and stylish screen presence, Ekubo became one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces. His role in the 2012 movie In the Cupboard earned him the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award at the Best of Nollywood Awards, cementing his place among the industry’s leading actors.
